Welcome Dr. Harman

It is with great enthusiasm that the Oregon-Davis School Corporation announces that Dr. Don Harman has been named the new Superintendent. Dr. Harman is excited about the high level of tradition, pride and drive for excellence in the areas of academics and extra- curricular activities for the youth in the Oregon-Davis School Corporation.

Dr. Harman has been Principal of South Vermillion High School for the past three years. He has held other administrative positions at the middle school, junior/senior high school, and the high school level. Dr. Harman secured his Superintendent License (Ed.S.) in 2010 from Indiana State University and received his Doctorate Degree (Ed.D.) in 2015 from Indiana State University.

As the Oregon-Davis Superintendent, Dr. Harman believes that the important factors for maximizing student achievement include relationships, relevance, and rigor. Dr. Harman states that “Positive relationships with students, relevant curriculum, and rigorous curriculum need to be present in all aspects of the school corporation to maximize student achievement and to allow learning opportunities for all students. All students need to have a positive connection to their school whether that connection is an academic or vocational course, an extra-curricular activity such FFA, band, or an athletic team. Students need to feel safe at school to maximize learning.”

Dr. Harman and his wife, Shannon, enjoy exercising, riding bikes, boating, and watching college sporting events. They married last fall on the campus of Indiana University. Mrs. Harman has been a Guidance Counselor for 17 years.

Oregon Davis Elementary will be accepting signups for preschool for 2016-17 through the rest of the school year. Please stop by the elementary office to fill out a brief information sheet and bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization records. A child is eligible to attend preschool if he or she is 4 or 5 years old and will be entering kindergarten during the 2017-18 or 2018-19 school year.

Make the Most of this Time of Year

Summer is a great time to enrich and enhance student learning in a fun way. Parents can plan small, inexpensive or free outings in and around Hamlet that will allow students to expand their knowledge and pique curiosity. Parks and nature preserves serve as excellent outdoor classrooms where children can learn and explore. Children need to read daily, so picking out books at the library is a fun way to read for pleasure and keep up on reading skills. Going out with your child is not possible each and every day, playing at home and outside help children learn and grow.

It has been an amazing year and an amazing journey for our seniors at Oregon-Davis. They have put in years of hard work, and as a result, their futures are coming together before their eyes. Some have been accepted to colleges across the country, some are pursuing a specific vocation while others are taking advantage of community college.

We will come together as a community to celebrate these students’ accomplishments together at our annual graduation ceremony on June 3, 2016. We hope to see you there!
